[edit] Blacksmithing 101
This is probably the most useful skill for beginning warriors. It enables users to craft their own armor and weapons, which at early stages can be incredibly useful. It's the most common tradeskill that players invest time in to as well, which also conveys the usefulness of it.
At early stages, the ability to craft armor and weapons is invaluable. In later stages, however, it still proves itself as a useful skill. The later stages of crafting, especially with more advanced materials extracted from mining sources enables powerful weapons and surprisingly sturdy armor. It even opens the avenue of crafting cannons, mortars, and cannonballs for sea-faring warriors in later stages. While many times this skill becomes forgotten by warriors due to drops and the excitement of combat, the wise warrior will continue to increase his skill in his spare time and can actually turn blacksmithing into a lucrative career.
[edit] The Basics
For new players on Valinor, there are NPC's that can explain the details of the basic tools and even supply a new user with a first set for free. For that reason, this will not be the place to explain the basics in detail. This guide is more focused on introducing new players to the basics of mining, smelting, and crafting once on the mainland, where many times explanations can be hard to come by.
Once arriving on the mainland, you've hopefully honed your craft to a decent degree. If not, feel free to run to the supply shop and buy a pickaxe and hammer. There should also be a guide on how to use them, and with the right materials and anvil nearby, you can begin your career.
Mountain ranges are not rare on the mainland. They are plentiful and often secluded for the greedy miner who wants a mountain to himself. Silvest offers close mountain ranges for low-level players, and the lands north of parian hold more mountains with slighly more difficult mobs. After acquiring resources, smelt the metals into ingots and forge weapons near the anvil. There ways of getting the best from the materials are offered, it's smart to watch your experience and what offers highest without using a lot of materials.
[edit] Special Tools
There are tools available for the blacksmither to increase his level for each skill. Some tools are used to advance your level to craft better weapons, or often times to increase your level so that you can acquire more experience in that skill. There are special pickaxes that increase mining, special hammers to increase forging, rings to increase all skills, and others. We'll list them here, but finding them or buying them is left in your hands.
Stonebiter Pickaxe - It adds +10 to mining, but requires a base skill of 20.
Veldan's Hammer - It adds +10 to forging, but requires a base skill of 20.
Anvil of Veldan - It adds +10 to blacksmithing, and grants the owner to craft anywhere with it.
Miner's Helm - It adds +10 to mining, but requires 22 base Strength orbs
Kobold Miner's Belt - It adds +5 to mining, and only requires level 15.
Dalvon Miner's Ring - It adds +5 to mining, smelting, forging, and only requires level 14.
Smelter's Gloves - It adds +10 to smelting, but requires a base skill of 20.
[edit] Advanced Blacksmithing
Once a player reaches higher levels in mining, they are able to acquire rarer metals to work with. For example, Brimidian is one, mined from crimson rocks scattered across the land at level 45 mining. These require skilled hands and workmanship to smelt and forge, and often result in failed attempts.
Being of such quality metal, to forge weapons and armor with this material a blacksmither must seek out an anvil strong enough to endure the process. There have been rumors of places that hide areas of such stones and pillars of unnatural strength. The legends tell of obelisks and spires in dangerous lands that are capable of enduring the forging of these powerful metals, but they remain legends often due to the monsters that protect them and the difficulty of locating them. When the time comes, each blacksmith seeking the knowledge sets on his journey to find these places, and often finds more than they bargained for in their journey...
