[edit] Anonymous Editing?

An important decision may need to be reconsidered by contributors to this wiki.

Should potential contributors to AEWiki be required to register as users (like it is now)?

It is possible to allow 'pseudo-anonymous' editing of the Wiki. Edits coming from such contributors would be marked with their IP address. Such editing is considered to be part of the Wiki:WikiWay or Meatball:WikiWay, but I haven't been sure that true WikiWay is optimal for this kind of Wiki.

Which begs the more general question, "What kind of Wiki do we aspire to be?"

I've read some more about the WikiWay, and now I'm thinking anoynmous is better. Johorne | Talk 20:05, 11 Feb 2005 (PST)

I tend to think anonymous would not be good for this type of "wiki" because of what this "wiki" is about - a game - which attracts children and even childish adults. We see what that gets us on the game forums at times and I fear anonymity would make some people more likely to post drivel in here.

That said, it's looking like something is wrong with the registration feature? Can't sign up for a new account at this time? Is there a "wiki-master" lurking in here someplace who can fix that for us? --Morganfey 11:30, 24 Apr 2006 (PDT)

Hey there I'm around,

Yeah I'm 'sysoping'. I've had to disable the user creation because of spamming. I need to upgrade the version of wiki as well - that may solve the problem (better automatic sign up process). For the time being, e-mailing me at johorne at wolfbound.com with a desired username will work. I'll have the wiki then e-mail you back a generated private password.

Thanks, J. Hope the registration form doesn't make you crazy! --Morganfey 20:43, 25 Apr 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Spammers

Looks like there's been a lot of spammers coming into the Wiki but lately they've been breaking the main page. To fix, log in, open history for the page, find the last good version of the main page, edit and save. That will restore the page. --Morganfey 02:25, 24 March 2011 (PDT)

Might I suggest restricting new accounts until the spammers go away? Tower 02:08, 4 May 2011 (PDT)

Hi Tower. The admin, Johorne, seems unavailable, to restrict access. I have tried to contact him when I noticed this happening. It has only been happening since February 2011, it appears. Only thing I can think to do is make a project of looking at recent changes, going to the spam and editting out all content and saving. Laborious but the only thing I can think to do without admin rights. --Morganfey 07:20, 4 May 2011 (PDT)

Sorry, have been a bit busy - but I'm still around. Looking into problem, and the idea of a gated community seems fine to me as well. -
